Age: 15 to 20 years as on June 1st.
Education: In continuing school education, having completed Class IX
Language & Communication: Appropriate ability to convers, read and write in Hindi or English.
An average sense of rhythm and music and ability to express it through movement of the body and facial expression.
Prior experience or interest in any other art form such as music, theatre, visual arts, etc.

Advanced Course

Dance Courses

The Preparatory Phase is only meant for Diploma Course. A candidate who is talented but owing to lack of opportunities for proper training cannot make the grade commensurate with his/her age, is given the benefit of being in the Preparatory Phase. Within one year, if the candidate by dint of hard work attains the required level of proficiency according to the considered opinion of the concerned teacher or as per the assessment of a team of teachers, he/she is considered to join the regular stream of training. If however, even after lapse of one year, the candidate is unable to make the required grade, he/she is asked to discontinue his/her training at the Kendra.

ESSENTIALS:

Age: 19 to 23 years as on June 1st.
Education: Class XII passed (Senior Secondary School Certificate)
Entry Level: Diploma Honours Course (1st Year)
Language & Communication: Appropriate ability to convers, read and write in Hindi or English.
Basic requirements:
- Successfully completed Diploma Pass Course or its equivalent
- Physically and mentally sound

DESIRABLE:

Training and experience in Hindustani Vocal Music, Tabla or Pakhawaj
Experience or interest in any other creative discipline such as Literature, Theatre, Visual Arts, etc.

TRAINING:

Proficiency in performance ability in the stylized movement vocabulary, rhythm and repertoire of Kathak.

Knowledge and awareness of the inter-connections between Kathak and Hindustani Classical Music.

Interest/ability/proficiency in Hindustani vocal or instrumental music.

Ability to perform and demonstrate the following:
- - Vandana
  - Teentaal - Theka, Nagma, Tatkaar, Thaat, Amad, Tihai, Paltey/BolBant/Ladi, Turda, Paran, Parmelu, Chakkardar compositions, Gat Nikas, Gat Bhav, Kavitta and musical compositions as Sargam
  - Jhaptaal and Dhamaar taal - Theia, Nagma, Taakaar, Tihai
  - Thumri in its primary format

Knowledge of the history and evolution of Kathak.

Introductory knowledge of Panchajaati in rhythm.

Introductory knowledge of the relevant chapters of Natya Shastra and Abhinaya Darpan.

Introductory knowledge of the classical and major folk dance forms of India.

Ability to recite and dance all Nritta and musical compositions on Theka.

Knowledge of eminent artistes, Gurus of Kathak dance.

Definitions of all technical terms such as Tihai, Taal, Thumri, etc. included in the practical demonstration.

ESSENTIALS:

Age: 21 to 26 years as on June 1st.
Education: Graduate or equivalent examination
Entry Level: Post Diploma Course (1st Year)
Language & Communication: Appropriate ability to convers, read and write in Hindi or English.
Basic requirements:
- Having completed Diploma Honours Course from Kathak Kendra or equivalent (including training in Tabla/Pakhawaj, Hindustani Sashtriya Gayan and broad theoretical understanding of Kathak and related aspects.
- Physically and mentally sound

DESIRABLE:

Interest and / or experience in any other related discipline such as theatre, literature or visual arts.

TRAINING:

All requirements of Diploma Honours Course.
Performance level skill in the stylised movement vocabulary, rhythm and extensive repertoire of Kathak.
Practical knowledge of Tabla or Pakhawaj and Hindustani Sashtriya Gayan.
Knowledge and awareness of the inter-connections between Kathak and various related subjects and disciplines such as:
Hindustani Sashtriya Gayan
Stagecraft
Study of classical treatises including Natya Sastra and Abhinaya Darpan.

Knowledge and application of basic concepts such as Naad, Shruti, Star, Sartaj, Kan swar, Alankaran, Raag and their Thaat, Ashray Raag.
Knowledge of various genres of Hindustani Sashtriya Gayan such as Hari, Kamari, Khayal, Thumri, Dhrupad and Dhamaar.
Bandish ki Thumri and Chhota Khayal with Taan and Alaap in any of the following Raagas: Yaman, Alhaiya, Bilawal, Bhairav, Bhairavi, Kafi, Chandrakauns, Tilakkamod, Pilu, Tilang, Gara, Des.
Knowledge of Nagma in Kathak dance.

Knowledge of the instrument and primary ability to tune it.
Knowledge of the basic vocabulary and proficiency in performing introductory repertoire in Teentaal, Jhaptaal and Dhamaar Taal.
Introductory ability to translate the dance compositions into Tabla or Pakhawaj bols.

Thorough understanding of the Taala (rhythm) concept in Indian music including Jaati, Tati, Sasha Prana and their applications in Kathak.
Relevant chapters of Natya Sashtra and Abhinaya Darpan.
The eight classical dance forms of India with detailed knowledge of at least one.
The major folk dance forms of India

ESSENTIALS:

Age: Below 40 years.
Education: A student of the Kathak Kendra having completed Post Diploma Course, who desires to teach Kathak.
Entry Level: Dance teacher in a school/Dance institution.
Language & Communication: Appropriate ability to convers, read and write in Hindi or English.
Basic requirements:
- Physically and mentally sound

TRAINING OBJECTIVE:

The Refresher Course has been designed to help and encourage teachers engaged in the field of Kathak Dance to renew their contact with master teachers and to refresh themselves with the recent development in the field of Kathak. The concept behind the course is one of creating opportunity for ongoing education for those who, by nature of their occupation or owing to lack of opportunity may have failed to keep abreast with contemporary developments in Kathak.

Duration of the course is maximum of two terms of six months each. The trainee is expected to participate in the production work of the Kendra, to watch classes and to join practical classes. 80% attendance is mandatory.

TRAINING OBJECTIVE:

To provide initial training to a candidate who is talented and having true desire of becoming a good Tabla/Pakhawaj/Sarangi/Vocal artiste. During this course initial idea could be fromed about talent, aptitude and sincerity of the students.

Considering the importance of Tabla/Pakhawaj/Sarangi accompaniment and Vocal with Kathak dance, this 3 year Diploma Special Course has been prepared.

ESSENTIALS:

Age: 20 to 25 years as on June 1, 2024.
Education: Graduate or equivalent.
Entry Level: Diploma Special Course (1st Year)
Language & Communication: Appropriate ability to convers, read and write in Hindi or English.
Basic Requirements:
- Talented candidate having aptitude for percussion playing sensitivity to rhythms and good grounding in vocal music.
- Physically and mentally sound

TRAINING OBJECTIVE:

To provide advanced training so that the students may acquire the art of Tabla/Pakhawaj/Sarangi/Vocal with its finer aspects, especially the art of accompanying with Kathak dance and establish as a solo Tabla/Pakhawaj/Sarangi player and Vocal artiste as well as a good accompanist specially for Kathak dance.
